The Nintendo Direct presentation that happened today was centered around everyone’s favorite video game sidekick- Luigi. Nintendo President Iwata has declared that 2013 is the “Year of Luigi.” To kick things off, Mario & Luigi Dream Team and Mario Golf World Tour were announced for the 3DS. There was a previous Mario & Luigi RPG series on the DS, and many fans missed them teaming up together, so this game is the answer for that. The Mario Golf World Tour game will be developed by Camelot Software Planning, and will feature familiar game mechanics and characters. I’m not used to playing sports related Mario games on handheld consoles like the 3DS, so it will be interesting to see how this will play out.
Continuing with the “Year of Luigi” theme, Iwata also announced a DLC pack coming to New Super Mario Bros. U entitled New Super Luigi U. That DLC will make it so the game is centered around everyone’s favorite green hatted sidekick Luigi, rather than Mario, and it will be released by the end of the year on the eShop. On another note, a Miiverse community was also announced and set up for The Legend of Zelda. In other news, Animal Crossing New Leaf’s release date was confirmed to be June 9th. This 3DS game will feature many new features and mechanics such as being able to actually build your own house with countless customizable options. Also, instead of having to pay off your debt by working for Tom Nook, you will be acting as mayor of your own town.
Then, the focus came back to the Wii U. Lego City Undercover will be released on March 18th with its 3DS sequel The Chase Begins being available on April 21st. Ninja Gaiden 3: Razer’s Edge will be getting another DLC pack later this month which will include new character skins, and 25 ninja trial missions. The best part of all, the DLC pack will be free. Also, Wii Street U, which will be powered by the almighty Google, will be available on the Wii U eShop for free.
Next on the docket was the announcement of various 3DS and WiiU eShop titles like HamoKnight from Game Freak, which will be a 2D side-scrolling rhythm game. Mario & Donkey Kong: Minis on the Move was also announced. One of the more exciting announcements (for me anyway) was the fact that they are going to update Virtual Console with Harvest Moon and Legend of the River King, which were originally on the Game Boy Color. As for the Wii U, a Wii U ZombiU bundle via Ubisoft will be launched on February 17th. Games such as Bit Trip Runner 2 and Zen Pinball 2 will be coming later this month as well. Toki Tori 2 will be coming in March, and Castlevania: Mirror of Fate and Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate demos will be released later this month, with the game’s actual full release dates coming on March 5th and March 19th respectively. Need For Speed Most Wanted U has a release date of March 19th, and The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct will be coming to the Wii U on March 26th. To finish out this announcement, Injustice Gods Among Us becomes available on April 16th, and Disney Infinity is coming to the Wii, WiiU, and 3DS sometime in June.
Perhaps the most exciting announcement for a lot of Nintendo fans came at the very end of the presentation. Reggie Fils-Aime showed up at the end of the Nintendo Direct presentation and announced that Donkey Kong Country Returns will be remade for the 3DS. No other details were revealed, but even so, I think this made a lot of fans happy, and out of all the things announced today, this was the one that I am most excited about. It looks like Nintendo has a lot on their plate in the coming months, it will be interesting to see how everything unfolds. You can check out the whole Nintendo Direct presentation video below.
